Lohin McKinnon Wine Barrel Aged Single Malt WhiskyLohin McKinnon – Wine Barrel Finished Single Malt Whisky – Black Sage Vineyard Collaboration Edition

Lohin McKinnon Whisky hails from the realm of Central City Brewers & Distillers out of Surrey BC. For this small batch whisky they have partnered with Black Sage Vineyards for a VQA collaboration. First aged in ex-bourbon barrels the spirit was finished in Black Sage Pipe Barrels, a port style wine.

The colour is an amber colour with reddish-wine notes adding a darker, richer hue to the spirit. On the nose there is a rich, fortified wine character that takes charge with notes of dried cherry, vanilla and chocolate along a mellow woody-oak character. The nose leads into the flavour where cherry notes are added to with flavours of figs and apricot along with a smooth vanilla, oak and chocolate tone. As a fairly young whisky the flavour is bright but not necessarily hot. The fruit character from the wine barrels comes through up front and allows the base spirit notes to be somewhat subdued in comparison.

Overall this whisky is smooth and balanced, tending more towards the wine character than a traditional side of whisky flavour. The purist may object but the whisky adventurist may just find a new favourite in this unique, British Columbia collaboration whisky.
